How To UnTether Jailbreak Your 4.2.1 iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad

GreenPois0n, a website that is popular for providing jailbreaks for Apple devices in the past has just released their untethered jailbreak for all devices on firmware 4.2.1.

Jailbreaking your device opens up a whole new world of possibilities and allows you to do so many things you can not do on a regular Apple device.

For those of you who do not know the difference between a tethered and untethered jailbreak, tethered means your device cannot reboot itself. Untethered means you can reboot and basically do everything a normal un-jailbroken iPod can do.

How To Unther Jailbroke Your Apple Device With GreenPois0n

  1. Make sure your device is powered off and plugged into your computer. To do so hold on to the power button until a onscreen message saying ‘Turn off Device’ appears.
  2. Go to GreenPois0n and download their jailbreaking software. Choose between Mac or Windows. Note: Linux is not ready at the moment for download
  3. Once it is done downloading, unzip the folder (7-Zip) and double click on the GreenPois0n icon.
  4. Once ready, click on ‘Prepare To Jailbreak’.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions
  6. GreenPois0n should begin to insert code into your device.
  7. Once its done go back to your respective Apple device and click on the ‘Cydia’ app.
  8. Done

If you followed everything correctly your device should be jailbroken. Also please be aware of the small possibility of bricking your device, so always backup everything before you jailbreak.

  4. Thanks for this! I just bought the 3G iphone and can’t stand the keyboard. I hear that if I jailbreak it I can download a better keyboard, but I’m a little afraid to do it. Guess I’m a conformist! Maybe I’ll get brave and try it.
I like your blog, lots of good articles.

Thanks for the kind words. Dont worry about the jailbreak, even though there is a one in a million shot it will mess up your device take the risk. You can always just restore (just take a note of the apps you have now so you wont forget).

Also jailbreaking is amazing! I have done so many cool things like for example Im using the Android lockscreen instead of the regular Apple one. It rocks!

    Thanks for commenting Lori!

I didn’t know it was possible to jailbreak anything higher than 4.0. I don’t know if i’ll ever have an iphone and if i do i don’t know if i’d jailbreak it. i have an ipod touch running 3.1.2; untethered jailbreak by spirit. its good to know that if i accidentally upgrade or choose to upgrade in the future i’ll still be able to jailbreak. Nice post Edwin.
